Excitement builds for opening of Denny Sanford Premier Center

Posted: Updated:

A lot is happening inside the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

The city announced the halfway point Wednesday.

But, there's also a lot happening outside the center which has people excited.

The opening of the Denny Sanford Premier Center could have a big impact on the surrounding area.

The city is upping Russell Street from four lanes to six.

And right across the street from where we're standing is Buffalo Wild Wings, where a year from now, it could get very busy.

Once construction on the Denny Sanford Premier Center is complete, finding a table at this restaurant across the street could be challenge.

Diner Paige Collin said "it's going to be crazy. It's going to make this place real happen for sure."

"That is real cool that we live... that you can go see a sporting event and then come over here and grab some food. It makes the area a little bit more appealing for sure," Collin added.

Construction of the center has reached the halfway point.

And many people are anxiously awaiting it's completion.

Diner Ann Beesley said "I am hoping that Barry Manilow is coming (laughs). That would be great and we also like the indoor football and basketball. that will be fun for us too."

"There's going to be more things to do down here and you don't have to drive as far, it's going to be great," Collin said.

And when the finishing touches on the Denny Sanford Premier Center are put in place, taking Russell street to the event center is going to look a lot different than it does now.

Mark Cotter, Director of Sioux Falls Public Works, said "it will be a modern roadway, the median will be raised. There will be trees, upgraded lighting and there will be areas along the way where we do landscape it."

"It's not going to be a plain-old six-lane road. It's being built not only for vehicles and trucks, it also has bike lanes," Cotter added.

There's a lot of activity going on inside the event center Wednesday, but once it's finished, the benefits could stretch beyond Sioux Falls.

"It can do nothing but help us in Brandon too. To the motels that are there and the restaurants. Because a lot of times, people who come for big events don't want to stay right in Sioux Falls," Beesley said.
