Moore and Pahuta Lead Birds to Win Over Gary

Posted: Updated:

SIOUX FALLS – Ben Moore pitched a quality start, and Tim Pahuta led a Sioux Falls Canaries offensive attack that pounded out 14 hits in a 9-3 victory over the Gary Southshore RailCats Saturday night before 3,776 fans at the Birdcage.

Every Canaries hitter had at least one hit, and the Birds are undefeated against Gary Southshore (34-26) this season in six games.  They have also won eight straight at the Birdcage, tying a team record.

Sioux Falls (26-35) broke a scoreless tie when Nate Baumann hit a solo home run, his eighth, in the second inning.  They added two more when Tim Pahuta launched his 16th home run in the third, giving the Birds a 3-0 lead.

Pahuta continued his big night in the fourth.  After a Marcos Rodriguez RBI single, the Birds designated hitter cranked a three-run shot, giving Sioux Falls a 7-0 advantage.  The home run was Pahuta's 100th of his professional career, and it marked the fourth time this season the veteran has hit multiple homers in a game.

Moore (7-3) was brilliant, allowing two hits and one run while fanning seven and walking none in 6.1 innings of work.  He didn't allow a runner to reach second base until there was one out in the seventh, when he had to leave the game with an injury.

Will Krout (2-5) was saddled with the loss for the RailCats.  He allowed 13 hits and eight runs in his four-plus innings of work.  Christian Vitters, Zac Mitchell, and Ryan Babineau had the RBIs for the RailCats.

Pahuta went 2-for-4 with five RBI, while Baumann, Marcos Rodriguez, Stephen King, and Nick Van Stratten each had one run batted in.

The four-game home series concludes at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, at Sioux Falls Stadium. It's a Sunday Family Funday, and it's Xcel Energy Day at the Birdcage.  Gates open at noon. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM, 98.1-FM KWSN and kwsn.com.
