Mayor: Sioux Falls is strong, on solid ground

Posted: Updated:

The city of Sioux Falls is on solid ground, at least through 2014. It is thriving and even more growth is in store.

Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether held his annual budget address, Thursday afternoon.

For starters, Huether said citizens are pleased with where they live.

"For generations, we have been talking about how someday wouldn't it be great if we created an environment where our kids and grand kids would want to stay? That someday is now," Mayor Mike Huether said.

From new jobs, investor confidence and quality of life, Huether says this city is on the right track, and growing quickly. With that comes many things, including additions to city employees.

"Four new police officers, animal control officers and fire inspector will help keep this town safe," Mayor Huether said.

...and to keep it moving:

"We'll hire a traffic engineer, focus on street expansion from 41st street - Sertoma to Tea Ellis. 10th and Sycamore and yes traffic signal improvements at 85th and Minnesota, 49th and Solberg. Improvements that will keep Sioux Falls moving strong," Huether said. 00>

He says what's even more impressive now is the dream many had years ago, for Sioux Falls, is becoming a reality: keeping kids and grand kids here to stay.

"We've created good jobs with solid benefits, capturing quality of life improvements and making great things happen and doing it while living in our means. Working together, we've made this a reality. The budget we've proposed can help ensure we don't let this captured dream slip away," Huether said.

Enhancing the quality of life was a big factor in Thursday's address: like adding Snow Gates, more neighborhood parks and an indoor aquatic facility are at the top of the mayor's list. However, nothing is finalized as many of them are in the early stages of discussion. The people of Sioux Falls will decide on snow gates during a vote, April 2014.
