It has been a rough 24 hours on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in south central South Dakota. A powerful storm tore through the area yesterday afternoon.
By last night, those living near Mission were facing severe damage to their homes while others were told to get out of their homes.
Residents of the Rosebud Reservation have a horror story to tell about this storm: hailstones so big they smashed windows right out of homes and cars. Torrential rains so forceful they quickly overwhelming roads, lakes and rivers.
"I've never seen that in my life. I have lived here all my life. I've never seen it." Cyril Scott is a lifelong resident of this area and president of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. He estimates three inches of rain fell in a 30 minute time period.
The resulting water quickly overtopped two dams and filled Ghost Hawk Lake near Rosebud past capacity, literally ripping apart nearby drainage systems. "The rain was...it was a downpour. I mean it had to be a cloudburst of some sort."
In addition to this damage, roofs were ripped off some homes and some mobile homes were knocked right off of their foundations.
Josh Wilson says the entire thing is surreal. "You never really stop to think that this could happen here. and once it does its really a shock."
Residents near Spring Creek were evacuated from their homes for fear of widespread flooding damage and the possible failure of Rosebud Dam. That dam did hold...but Cyril Scott wonders...for how long. "I hope I don't see nothing like that again. its a scary feeling knowing that lives are in jeopardy and the well being of our people."
Two dams on the reservation....Rosebud Dam and Ghost Hawk Dam...were both overtopped by water from this storm. Those dams are in the process of being inspected to make sure they were not seriously damaged by this storm.
