'Save Our Neighborhood' group starts petition to fight zoning approval at 85th and Minnesota

Posted: Updated:

A group of south Sioux Falls neighbors makes its next move in a battle against a large retail and commercial development planned for their neighborhood. Part of which includes a Walmart Supercenter.

They call themselves 'Save Our Neighborhood' and they're not giving up their fight to stop construction at 85th and Minnesota.

The group started a petition.

It worked for them once. And they hope it works again.

Earlier this year, they took out a petition to force the city's zoning ordinance, 'Shape Places' to go to a public vote.

Now, they want to force the city council approved zoning of the land at 85th and Minnesota to go to a public vote.

It's not every day you see neighbors working together for a common cause. But these south Sioux Falls neighbors banded together.

And right now, they're gathering signatures for a petition to stop a Walmart Supercenter from being built across the street from their homes.

And part of their concerns include the cost of traffic improvements needed for the area.

But 'Save Our Neighborhood's spokeswoman, Dana Palmer, said this fight isn't just for these south side neighbors, but for all Sioux Falls homeowners.

"Twenty-seven improvements just to make one store work. The taxpayers are going to foot the bill for a great majority of that. I think Walmart has offered to pay for three. So the 24 other improvements that need to be made... the taxpayers. So that's another reason that this concerns not only our neighborhood but the whole city of Sioux Falls," Palmer said.

Palmer's group needs to collect 5,100 signatures by August 30th.

If they're successful, the approved re-zoning of the land will go to a public vote.
