School started bright and early Monday morning for many kids in the KSFY viewing area.
While not everyone is thrilled about waking up so early, both students and teachers agree that the first day of school is full of excitement, especially for those getting ready for their first year in the classroom as a teacher.
"It's still nerve racking as a first year teacher to come in to a classroom and not quite know what to expect, so I think I'm just excited as the kids are for the school year to start," said first-year teacher Caitlin Hodne, who will start as a fourth grade teacher at Harvey Dunn elementary in Sioux Falls.
Down the hall from Hodne, Judy Murphy is also excited for the first day of school, but for a very different reason. After 41 years, Monday will be Murphy's last first day of school as a teacher.
"Its a really mixed emotion because you know that you're not going to get to experience this again, but I have six grandchildren and I know that I have lots of first days of school to look forward to with them," said Harvey Dunn Librarian Judy Murphy.
No matter the year, Murphy says you can always count on the excitement on that first day of school.
"You look at it as, this is going to be a great year, we've got all this time ahead of us, and it just makes it a real special day," said Murphy.
An experience she's happy to pass on to the next generation of teachers.
"What's your first day of school advice for me as a new teacher," asked Hodne.
"Put a smile on your face, a smile goes a long, long way to calm nerves, to keep everyone happy, and if they know that you feel good about what's happening in your classroom, they're going to feel the same way," said Murphy.
