An increase in crime numbers where you may least expect it has led Sioux Falls Police to be proactive against the numbers.
With theft on the rise in southeast Sioux Falls neighborhoods, neighbors can look out for a yellow door hanger on front doors starting Tuesday.
A new crime prevention effort to help nearly 500 homes in the Tuthill Park neighborhood. Officers say getting away with theft is sometimes as easy as driving through the neighborhood.
"If a car is left unsecured, garage open, it's all opportunity that bad guys take to go in and steal things," Officer Ed Centeno said.
"He's got a TV out there, his boat, looks like a couple bikes and nobody in there watching them. All of the people are probably in their house. Typical with the garage open. Someone canvassing the neighborhood looking for unsecured bikes... just like this house on the left," Officer Centeno said.
Rising crime in this area has caught some of the neighbors a little off guard.
"At first, it's alarming that there's a lot of theft around here. We usually don't worry about it. It's good they're proactive and on it and want to get it solved with everyone involved," SE Sioux Falls resident Ryan Welsh said.
"Every day, if I leave home, lock the door into my house. You don't know and scary things can happen. It's a good idea to be proactive, before things get out of control," resident Annie Welsh.
That's exactly what officers have in mind, passing out door hangers on Tuesday night to spread their message.
"The citizens are the eyes and ears of the police department. If we work together we'll make this that much of a safer place," Officer Centeno said.
Officer Centeno said the most he sees in the area are theft of small electronic items (laptops, phones, iPads, iPods), prescription medications out of cars and homes.
