Sioux Falls students get Chromebooks on second day of school
Within 25 minutes Tuesday morning, 1900 students at Washington High School had something that will change the way they learn in the classroom.
Each of them received a new Chromebook, part of the 1:1 Technology Initiative in the Sioux Falls School District.
On just their second day of class, students at Washington High School gathered in the gymnasium. But this wasn't an assembly. With a scan of their ID, students were issued one final tool for their next year of learning...a new Chromebook. Many students say they're ready for the new technology.
"We can take like notes and write and like even get on the internet to do research papers," Senior Karly Brodersen said.
"I write really fast and try to listen to the teacher and I think the Chromebook will really help us understand what's going on better," Senior Sydney Koel said.
Assistant Principal Dan Conrad says that's the whole idea behind the district's technology initiative - improving the classroom experience.
"The intent is to work with the Chromebook so they become ingrained in the culture and it becomes another tool, just like a textbook would be," Conrad said.
But while Chromebooks might eliminate the need to carry so many books, there's one thing it can't replace.
"At the end of the day the teacher is still the most valuable person in the classroom here," Conrad said.
All high school students are allowed to take the Chromebooks home with them.
Now you might be curious about what they can access online. The district says filters and other security measures prevent students from visiting websites they shouldn't.
