Four new residence halls open at SDSU

Posted: Updated:

Personal belongings litter campus streets, and there's a look on incoming freshman's faces. It's a look of anticipation, excitement, and bewilderment.

"I'm hoping to make a lot of friends, and I'm hoping our dance team does good and we get to nationals," said freshman Hannah Peters. "And, I'm hoping I get good grades and hopefully pass my first year."

One thing Peters won't have to worry about is her dorm room. SDSU opened four new residence halls Friday to accommodate students.

"SDSU continues to be a very popular choice for students not only in the region but in the nation," said associate VP of Student Affairs Doug Wermedal.

Over occupancy and a growth in enrollment led SDSU to build more residence facilities. The University took into consideration modern-day freshman's needs.

"The things they wanted were more natural light, so we have glass practically everywhere. They wanted larger living spaces. They wanted something as close to their home environment like fireplaces, on floor laundry, and full kitchens," said Wermedal.

The community living-like feel doesn't end there. Downstairs is a room that's equal parts fun and learning.

"Some awesome lounge chairs that can fold out and are very comfortable. They're working on putting up TVs all along the wall too," said sophomore Jeremiah Atkinson.

SDSU's hope is that these new residence halls enhance the student's experience and success.

Said Atkinson, "When students look at campuses they look at academic programs, student life, and the biggest thing is residence halls."
