Coyotes Ready for a Fresh Start

Posted: Updated:

(Vermillion)-  The USD Coyote football team starts the new season Saturday, ready for a fresh start after a 1-10 2012, where they lost a number of close games.

Joe Glenn is beginning his second season as the Coyotes head coach.  A man who is full of optimism, can't wait for his Yotes to kick things off.

"As of Friday, it will be 44 practices without a game.  That's the way it is for all the NCAA teams.  We get to start at home, 2pm Saturday against California-Davis in Vermillion.  I'm excited to get going, it's a new season, new ballgame."  says Glenn.

On offense, seven starters are back.  Junior quarterback Josh Vander Maten is the leader who's ready to take over after an up and down sophmore season, his first as a starter.

"I want to improve in all areas, and to do more to win those close games.  As the quarterback I need to lead this team and make plays." says Vander Maten.

"We have all the confidence in the world in Josh.  He's a leader, and I think a big thing is all seven guys on the line played last year."  says Glenn.

On defense, six starters are back.  The leader here is senior linebacker Tyler Starr, who's gotten a number of preseason accolades, he just wants more wins.

"I just want to make my teammates better and to teach the young guys, because we'll have a lot of young guys playing, which is good for a defense."  says Starr.

"We know he'll have a big year.  He disrupts everything even in practice, we stay away from number eleven.  We expect him to lead us to some victories." says Glenn.
