The South Dakota State Fair begins Thursday in Huron, beginning the morning with several 4-H competitions.
4-H students across the state are preparing their projects and loading up live stock to head to the state fair. After winning a purple ribbon for their project or performance, the state fair is the final round of competition for the year.
"For 4-Hers, the state fair is kind of like your climax, the end of what you're doing, and the end of what you're trying to reach, so if you do projects like baking or sewing, that's what you're trying to get to," said sate fair 4-H competitor Dustin Wahl.
For many 4-Hers across the state, showing cattle or other livestock is the biggest part of the state fair.
"I've been going to the state fair for as long as I can remember, my brothers showed livestock also, we went to the state fair then and camped there during the week," said 4-H livestock competitor Mary Dybedahl.
But 4-H and the State Fair are not just for agricultural kids, for example, Dustin Wahl will be competing in a 4-H public speaking competition at the state level.
"Most people just look at 4-H and they say O that's just for farm kids, I'm not a farm kid, and I love it," said Wahl.
No matter what they're competing in, all 4-H state fair goers agree on one of the best perks of the weekend.
"One of the best things is probably food, they have the best food in America at fairs," said Wahl.
"We go on some of the rides for a couple of days and we also love the food, there's like deep fat fried Oreo's and those are really good," said Dybedahl.
There will plenty of fair food and fun for everyone at the state fair thiss weekend. From free shows, carnival rides, magicians, vendors, animals and performances, the state fair has something for everyone. You can visit the SD State Fair web site for a full schedule of activities, including grand stage performers like the Eli Young Band and Three Doors Down.
Thursday is also military appreciation day—all veterans and active duty military personal can get into the state fair for free.
