Save Our Neighborhood petitions in; Walmart to review
The petitions to keep Wal-Mart out of a Sioux Falls neighborhood have been turned in, after exceeding the necessary signatures within three weeks.
The group Save Our Neighborhood is petitioning the Sioux Falls City Council's August 6 decision to rezone land at 85th Street and Minnesota Avenue, on the south side of Sioux Falls, from agricultural to commercial land. The decision comes after Save Our Neighborhood petitioned the "Shape Places" ordinance which also called for a Walmart at the street corner. The group was able to bring the "Shape Places" ordinance to a citywide vote through that movement.
Save Our Neighborhood turned in 6,362 signatures--- more than the 5,100 needed to refer the City Council's latest decision.
City Clerk Lorie Hogstad is currently reviewing the signatures that were turned into make sure they are all valid. Walmart has until 5 p.m. Monday to contest the petitions, which Hogstad said the company plans to do.
