September 11th is not only a
tragic day for America, it is also the anniversary of a heartbreaking day for
the Sioux Falls community.
Last year, a gunman shot and killed Amanda Connors
at cost cutters in Sioux Falls.
In an effort to honor Amanda, her friends and coworkers are
hosting a cut-a-thon today at the 41st street location in her memory.
haircut for 10 bucks is a good deal, but when it helps remember a lost one, and
provide hope for the future, it's invaluable.
son and I both got haircuts and made a donation," said Cathy Connors, Amanda's
was more than just a typical trim. It was an emotional journey for the mother
of Amanda Connors. The goal of today's Cut-A-Thon at the 41st street
Cost Cutters is to raise funds for the Amanda Connors
Memorial Scholarship at Stewart school.
went to school there and she really liked it and were going to try to pick a
girl that, kind of had her same outlooks on life and her grade point average
and all that kind of stuff. So we're going to try to be selective with who we
pick," said Kaylee Spolum, Cost Cutters General Manager.
say the response has been heartwarming. In fact, a
line of folks were waiting outside early this morning, not for a haircut
appointment, but just wanting to donate.
many complete strangers have reached out to us and made donations and
contributions, and said fantastic things and sent beautiful gifts," said
outpouring that friends and family tell us is fitting.
was always trying to help people and she just had a big heart and I know this
is something she'd really appreciate," said Spolum.
Amanda's passing there's so much sadness and this just brings a little bit of
happiness and joy back," said Connors.
Last year a similar event raised over $4,000 and was used to
provide three girls opportunities to chase their own stylist dreams.
just really want to thank the people that have been supportive and, you know,
the local Sioux Falls people have just been amazing, we appreciate everyone
coming out today," said Spolum.
This year Stewart School is matching $2,000 towards the
scholarship which brings the total over $4,000.
