That also means it's almost time for pheasant season.
And for a group of hunting veterans, it was also a good time to share stories and have some fun.
This pheasant hunt brings vets from different generations together.
They call this mission 'Warriors Never Give Up' but these vets aren't uniting to fight a national enemy, but to hunt pheasants.
Vietnam War veteran Mike Whiting said "I'm very honored to come out here and participate in this with these other soldiers.
Even though Whiting may be of a different generation, he has a lot in common with today's vets.
"It isn't something that I think is easily talked about . It's been a long time for me. It's been over 40 years since I was over there. And there's still stuff I don't talk about and I think the feelings mutual," Whiting said.
Former South Dakota Army National Guard soldier Brett Bastian came up with the idea for the hunt as a way to give back to others who serve and let vets know they're not alone.
"It was extremely successful. We had a little rain we had to contend with, we had 20-25 mile per hour winds but we were able to get sixteen roosters this morning and so I would say it was a very good start to our hunting day," Bastian said.
UFC fighter and celebrity hunter DB Dolloway said "yesterday, we only got five, so getting sixteen first thing in the morning is great and I think everyone enjoyed it. All the veterans had a great time."
"I thought it was a hoot. There was a lot of shootin' going on. And quite a few birds went down and so it's a lot of fun," Whiting said.
It looks like this weekend's hunt was a success, not only for the birds they caught, but also for the memories these vets will share.
Brett tells us they're already planning another warriors never give up hunt for this November.
