Horses killed in Hit & Run near Baltic

Posted: Updated:

Minnehaha County authorities are looking for someone who struck and killed three horses. It happened early Saturday morning, after the horses got out of a stable near Baltic.

Whoever was responsible, left the scene. The incident is being treated as a hit and run accident by the Minnehaha County sheriff's department.

The horses escaped from this fenced in area at West Ridge Equestrian Center. It appears that a 1990 or 91 Chevy or GMC pickup, or SUV traveling north on 469th Avenue collided with the horses. Two died there on the road, and the third limped into a nearby field before passing away. Sheriff's tell us there were no signs of animal cruelty. The only evidence Sheriffs have to go from are two broken chrome mirrors and broken glass from a side window.

"There was no sign at all, where the horses were kept, of anyone purposely letting the animals out. It appeared that they smashed through the fence," said Captain James Hoekman of the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Department, "If you're out in the roadways and you hit a deer or hit a cow or a horse or any other kind of domestic animal, you should report that right away to your local law enforcement."

KSFY tried several times to contact one of the horse owners, but our calls were not returned. The owner of the stables also did not want to talk.

Failure to report an accident is a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in jail.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call crime stoppers at (605) 367-7007.
