UPDATE: Lock down Lifted at Elk-Point Jefferson School

Posted: Updated:

Elk Point, SD - The lock down at Elk-Point Jefferson School has now been lifted, as the person authorities were searching for has been located, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The suspect was arrested today in Le Mars. Today's search stemmed from an incident last night.

The Elk Point-Jefferson School went on lockdown at 8:45am Wednesday morning.

Superintendent Brian Shanks says the school went into lockdown after the police department called to say they are searching for a person of concern in the area.

Shanks tells ABC9 that local law enforcement are patrolling at and around the school. He went on to say the lockdown is just a precaution and that students are not in eminent danger.

Doors to the K-12 school are locked during school hours and Shanks says classes are taking place as usual. Parents are being allowed to come and get their student(s) if they feel the need to.
