Twins select names for twin sheep in Zoo's name the baby contest

Posted: Updated:

The Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History has selected the winners of its contest to name the twin baby sheep.

Twins Max and Baylee, age 4, of Sioux Falls submitted the names "Snicker," and "Doodle."  The Great Plains Zoo selected the winning names from over 500 entries.  For their efforts, Max and Baylee received a nearly three-foot plush horse.

"Snicker" and "Doodle" were born May 21 and weighed about six pounds and five pounds, respectively.  The twins were two of three Jacob sheep born this spring at the Zoo.  The kids can be seen in the Zoo's Hy-Vee Face-to-Face Farm.

"This contest helps to connect kids with our rare-breed farm animals at the Zoo," said Elizabeth Whealy, President and CEO of the Great Plains Zoo.  "These days, kids have fewer opportunities to visit farms, but thanks to Hy-Vee, we have created a kid-friendly farm at the Zoo, where kids can get up-close to feed and pet goats and cows and sheep."

In 2009, the Zoo received a $250,000 gift from Hy-Vee to transform the former Children's Zoo into the colorful and engaging Hy-Vee Face-to-Face Farm.  This area now features five times the number of animals, fun signage and 15-foot themed 3-D archways.
