Iowa's unemployment rate up a bit to 4.9 percent

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa's unemployment rate climbed to 4.9 percent in August, a slight increase from July but far below the national rate. 

Iowa Workforce Development announced Friday that the seasonally adjusted rate was up slightly from July's 4.8 percent rate.

August's unemployment figure was down from 5.3 percent a year ago.

The national unemployment rate for August was 7.3 percent.

Iowa had 80,800 unemployed residents in August. That's an increase from the 79,000 unemployed in July.

Iowa's total workforce in August was 1,574,400. The total nonfarm employment dropped by 900 jobs to 1,532,500.
