Sioux Falls man dies in two-car crash on Interstate 29

Posted: Updated:

One man has died and two others are injured after a fiery crash in Sioux Falls, Saturday morning.

It happened just after 10 o'clock along Interstate 29, just south of west 12th street.

The highway patrol tells us one car, a blue Ford LTD, traveling northbound on I-29, crossed over the median and struck another car, a silver Buick SUV traveling southbound.

Then, the Ford LTD exploded in a ball of flames.

The driver of the Ford, a Sioux Falls man, was thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

There were two people in the silver SUV.

They were transported to a hospital for minor injuries.

Trooper Steve Schade was one of the first officers to arrive on the scene to help.

"There were just two vehicles involved but with the heavy amount of traffic that was traveling today on the interstate it got backed up very quickly, and the accident scene became very chaotic, with people wanting to help the people that were involved in the crash," Trooper  Schade said.

"You have feelings for what has happened but you have to be able to push that to the side and be able to do your job," Trooper  Schade added.

Authorities shut down a portion of the interstate between 12th street and 41st for several hours this afternoon.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is still looking into what could have caused this accident.
