It's the break law enforcement has been waiting for, for more than four decades.
Ever since Cheryl Miller and Pam Jackson Vanished into the night on May 29, 1971, police and family members have drawn all kinds of conclusions.
After multiple searches of his family's Union County farm, state prison inmate David Lykken was charged in their murders in 2007, only to have the charges dropped the next year when a taped confession turned out to be falsely recorded by another inmate.
Then Monday, a fisherman spotted an overturned car in Brule Creek, half a mile from Miller and Jackson's destination on the night they disappeared.
The car, a 1960 Studebaker, has been identified as the one driven by the teens, and today, a discovery inside the car that may give the families the closure they need.
It's right here on the banks of Brule Creek where investigators discovered a major break in the 42-year-old-mystery.
Human remains and the 1960 Studebaker the girls were last seen driving.
They were on their way to a party at this gravel pit , just a short distance away.
Union County Sheriff Dan Limoges said "the vehicle has been removed and has been put in storage and we will keep that for safe keeping for now."
But Sheriff Limoges explained that's not all they found.
"We have items of interest that the lab will have to go over, again I'm not the expert here, so I'm not going to be able to tell you exactly the items that we found," Sheriff Limoges said.
After the car was pulled from the creek bed, the sheriff contacted the girls' loved ones.
"And advised them that there has been some human remains recovered and I believe that makes them feel a lot better that we were able to be successful in recovering some items," Sheriff Limoges said.
The discovery of the car here may bring investigators one step closer to finding out what happened along this road, May 29th, 1971.
