Big Sioux River clean-up project

Posted: Updated:

The Big Sioux River runs right through the heart of Sioux Falls and tonight you can help clean it up. The South Dakota Canoe and Kayak Association is hosting a river clean-up project tonight at 5:30. They are meeting up at the 26th & I-229 Canoe Access Area. If you have a boat and would like to join them on the river, President of the South Dakota Canoe and Kayak Association Steven Dahlmeier says it helps to bring a milk crate or box to keep the trash you pick up on your boat. He also says that if you are planning to help out, you should dress to get wet and dirty. But if you don't have a boat and would still like to help, they are also cleaning up an area on shore. Dahlmeier advises to bring a pair of gloves if you want to pick up garbage on the banks. The Association will provide the trash bags. Dahlmeier says that the river is very polluted. He says kayakers have found everything from plastic bags to air conditioners to bikes and street signs.
