Vanadium metal a part of SD uranium mine proposal

Posted: Updated:

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A company that wants to mine for uranium in southwestern South Dakota also plans to harvest a metal used in car and jet parts.

Powertech Uranium wants to mine for vanadium, which is used in steel alloys. That was among several new details about the controversial mining project that emerged Tuesday during a public hearing in Rapid City.

The state Board of Minerals and Environment is conducting the weeklong hearing on a permit for the proposed mine. Supporters say it will bring jobs to the Edgemont area and tax revenue to the region and state. Opponents worry about possible harm to the environment.

Powertech plans to inject wastewater underground, rather than spraying it across surface land. Company officials say the mining won't pollute groundwater.
