Sanford Pentagon opens to the public for the first time

Posted: Updated:

Saturday was a great day to be outdoors but many were enjoying the indoor activities at the new Sanford Pentagon.

Six area high school volleyball teams took to the courts for the first time in an inaugural tournament.

This place is so new, you can smell the fresh paint.

But what strikes people the most is the design.

Stepping inside the Pentagon is almost like taking a trip back in time.

And what the inside looks like has been one of Sioux Falls best kept secrets.

The Sanford Pentagon, it's so new, there are still boxes to be unpacked, monitors to be unwrapped, trophy cases to be filled, and basketball courts to be unleashed.

Many people came out to take a look and root for their favorite team at today's volleyball tournament which touched off the big opening.

Sports fan Payton Seitz said "it's just so big, you walk in, you don't know where to go."

"I got lost," Seitz laughed.

Lori Remily said "it's nice to see the history where, all the teams that have made up the Sioux Falls area, and the concession stands are great, they're different at each one, they're not all the same. Yeah, it's just a great place."

Sanford Pentagon general manager Eric Larsen said "you can come out here and rent the court space for practice time. You can put on your own tournament out here.  You can be part of our tournament so there's numerous ways you can use this facility and it definitely is open to the whole public."

They're still putting the finishing touches on it but one of the coolest things to see here is the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
