Standoff in northern Sioux Falls ends with suspect in custody

Posted: Updated:

After six hours, the standoff in northern Sioux Falls has ended, according to police on scene.

David Jeremy Neuroth, Jr., 36, of Sioux Falls, is suspected of breaking a window at a home at 6601 N. 9th Ave. around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police reported that Neuroth allegedly had a gun and was familiar to the victims.

After the attempted burglary, he fled the scene, and police believe he was under the influence of meth, Hoekman said.

Around 9:20 a.m., officials learned that Neuroth was at a home on E. 70th St. North, off of N. Golden Nugget Ave.

The Sioux Falls Police Department's SWAT team was on scene. Hoekman said the surrounding neighborhood is under a shelter in place order, meaning no one is allowed to leave their home, but the area has not been evacuated.

Families affected by the shelter in place will be allowed to pick up their children after school, rather than bring buses into the neighborhood, Sioux Falls police said.

The Brandon Valley School District is making arrangements for elementary and middle school children from the neighborhood under SWAT protection to wait at the school for their parents.

In addition to the alleged burglary charges, Neuroth has an outstanding warrant for his arrest on an unrelated charge.

The Sioux Falls Police Department and the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office are on scene.
