Police Standoff Over, Suspect in Custody

Posted: Updated:

A home invasion call last night led law enforcement in Minnehaha County to an overnight search for a Sioux Falls man.

That led to a standoff at a north Sioux Falls home Wednesday and the arrest of 36-year-old David Neuroth Junior.

It happened in north Sioux Falls, at a home near East 70th Street North and Golden Nugget Avenue.

Folks say they are at ease, the standoff is over and they can now unwind after a hectic day.

"A little uncomfortable, I mean you don't see this kind of police presence in this development very often," said Dan Smith, a resident in the neighborhood.

Some residents of the Granite Valley development were surprised this morning when police told them to stay in their homes.  The shelter in place order meant no one could come in or leave.

"All this parade rolling down the street here they started chasing traffic away and clearing the area pretty well," said Brian Hurt, A & S construction.

It stayed quiet for a several hours. Some neighbors described the still scene as feeling eerie.

"He might have a gun, he might have a hostage, I don't know," said Hurt.

"As a matter fact the guys with the full body protective stuff and the weapons, that's kind of scary," said Smith.

To keep things safe for children, authorities coordinated with the Brandon Valley School District to prevent kids from riding the bus home into the middle of a dangerous situation.

"The park here, the kids are usually here, this is quite rare for this neighborhood," said Smith.

The standoff kept on-looking neighbors on edge, but the sheriff says everything ended without incident.

"You know, we're very satisfied that we were able to get people in and out early enough that they can get back to their normal lives," said Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead.

Neuroth is being charged with two counts of burglary in the first aggravated assault and has an outstanding warrant for his arrest on an unrelated charge.
