USD losing its ROTC military training program

Posted: Updated:

VERMILLION -- The University of South Dakota in Vermillion is one of 13 schools nationally losing its Reserve Officers Training Corps program.

The U.S. Army Cadet Command informed the Vermillion university this week.

LTC Ross Nelson, professor of military science at USD, told the Press & Dakotan the programs are being eliminated due to downsizing and "other fiscal developments."

The program is scheduled to continue through the end of the 2015 academic year.

Nelson says cadets in the program who graduate by then will get their commissions from USD. He says cadets who graduate after May 2015 will be given the option to transfer to other universities that have ROTC programs.

South Dakota State and the School of Mines and Technology still offer it.
