Pipestone taking a hit with closure of national monument

Posted: Updated:

There aren't many communities in our area that can claim a national monument. As the government shutdown continues, people in Pipestone, MN, are feeling the effects as orange barricades block the roads.

The National Monument in Pipestone is only supposed to be closed two days out of the year: Thanksgiving and Christmas. Being early October, we're not close to those two holidays. Thanks to a government shutdown, this is the fourth day the monument has been closed.

The Pipestone National Monument is a stop to nearly 80,000 visitors ever year representing roughly 48 countries around the world. If you do the math, that's a good chunk of change coming into the city of Pipestone. With the shutdown underway for four days now, and nobody knowing how long it's going to last, area Chamber of Commerce director Mick Myers says the community is taking a hit.

"I don't think some of the people in Washington, D.C. realize how much they're hurting smaller people that rely on businesses like this. The Pipestone National Monument brings traffic into the community, traffic spends money and that's what we're made of and it's that simple," Pipestone Chamber of Commerce director Mick Myers said.

Not only is the community of Pipestone taking a hit but on any given October day, just under a dozen workers are here at the monument. They are going without a paycheck.
