Jefferson residents recall oncoming storm the day after tornado hit

Posted: Updated:

It has been quite the 24 hours since several strong storms ripped through the region spawning numerous tornadoes.

A frightening scene around dinner time last night near Sioux City and surrounding communities.

Nearly a dozen twisters hit the region leaving extensive damage behind.

One of those communities was Jefferson in Union County South Dakota.

KSFY News met many neighbors who were cleaning up the damage.

In Jefferson, there is a beautiful gated community called Wynstone where neighbors told me they heard the storm coming towards them last night right before they took shelter in their basements.

And when the storm passed, it left a trail of destruction.

The tornado turned this quiet, peaceful neighborhood into what looked like a war zone with an army of trucks.

But as neighbors spent the day assessing the damage to their homes and cleaning up the broken branches, many told us they were just thankful none of their neighbors were hurt.

Jefferson resident Scott Smith said "I looked out that way and saw this huge swirling mass of air, a couple of football fields wide, spinning, and then there was a dark wall of rain, and then it changed really fast and we all got into the house.>"

Jefferson resident Ryan Dial said "it was quiet at first. And the wind picked up, then you started to hear the infamous train coming. There were some windows breaking in my house, and that was a little scary."

"You can't really get out of the way of something like this. If it's coming at you and your house, you're just going to have to hunker down and hope for the best," Smith said.

Despite how bad the damage looks, what really amazed me was how everyone I spoke with had such a good attitude about the tornado passing through their area.

I also spoke with one woman who's house was destroyed, and while she didn't want to go on camera, she was laughing and joking with us.
