Sioux Falls looking for postseason NCAA play

Posted: Updated:

There's no doubt Sioux Falls is growing -- and with more people comes more venues like the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

Those venues are already attracting big names. NCAA representatives will be here Monday scouting out the various facilities.

"You've got these rabid sports fans in Sioux Falls. You tie in that 'South Dakota nice' and then you throw in our new events center and add that with our Sanford Sports Complex and so much more. I really like our chances," said Mayor Mike Huether.

Of course Mayor  Huether is excited. This is an opportunity that neither Sioux Falls or South Dakota has ever had -- to play host to a national tournament.

"We represent the NCAA and the people in the Midwest incredibly well and I think they'll get a good flavor for that after they leave," said Mayor Huether.

NCAA representatives will  be checking out Sioux Falls on behalf of Division II Athletics.

Sports Authority Director Wes Hall said the key is community engagement -- something Sioux Falls has.

"Organizations we have worked with before to show that were not just about selling seats necessarily but we are also about getting students engaged in the city of Sioux Falls," said Hall.

Halls said this would be a chance to get Sioux Falls on the map with regards to sports a cross the country -- and the mayor agrees.

"We want to let them know just how hungry we are for events that they may find suitable for Sioux Falls," said Mayor Huether.

Hall said he's hopeful that by the end of the month the NCAA representatives will let Sports Authority know that they've selected Sioux Falls as a finalist for the tournaments.
