SDSU stadium effort gets $12.5 million in pledges

Posted: Updated:

BROOKINGS -- An effort to build a new football stadium at South Dakota State University has received a $12.5 million boost.

Sioux Falls philanthropist T. Denny Sanford is donating $10 million, and Sioux Falls banker and former Jackrabbits defensive tackle Dana Dykhouse $2.5 million. The pledges were announced over the weekend.

The 18,000-seat facility will cost up to $65 million to build and will be named the Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Officials expect to submit a plan to the state Board of Regents next week. The project also will need the approval of the state Legislature.

SDSU's current stadium is 51 years old. Officials hope to open a new one in 2016, financing much of it through bonds.
