And as we enter flu season, there is a bit of worry about the Centers for Disease control, the CDC says because of the furlough, they will not be able to track any flu outbreaks that may pop up.
It's just another symptom of the federal shutdown.
Because of the furloughs, the Centers for Disease Control, the CDC, doesn't have the staff to collect national flu data.
The flu could be headed across the country without anyone paying attention to track it's path.
As we enter flu season, these familiar maps from the CDC, which keeps a watchful eye on the spread of the virus, could be put on hold, because of the shutdown.
Falls Community Health Dr. Tracy Davies said "even though the CDC is not tracking it right now, because of the shut down apparently, it's still a good idea to get the flu shot. The flu will still come to South Dakota at some point and it's better to get the shot now and be prepared, rather than get the flu later."
Which is something doctors say you probably don't want to get.
"When people get the flu, they can be affected for anywhere from a couple days to a week or even longer, so that's time out of school, that's time out of work, and that's time that you're sick and you don't really want to be sick," Dr. Davies said.
And while everyone may not get sick, getting a flu shot can not only keep yourself healthy but others too.
"Part of the reason to get a flu shot is so that someone who is maybe young and healthy doesn't pass it on to somebody who will be really sick from the flu and maybe have to go into that hospital because of it," Dr. Davies said.
The CDC keeps track of confirmed flu cases each year so it can be prepared for the next.
"The influenza virus is constantly evolving and changing a little bit, so we have to change the vaccine a little bit every year, to keep up with the changing virus," Dr. Davies said.
But even without the CDC tracking the flu, Doctor Davies has one piece of advice.
"Get the flu shot," Dr. Davies said.
The CDC may not be working, but the South Dakota Department of Health tells me it will continue to track flu cases in our state.
