The newest medical center to come under the Avera wing is Avera St. Mary's in Pierre. The facility just completed a building renovation and now the same can be said for the staff.
Surgery is a fast paced world, one that is expanding at Avera St. Mary's.
"It's very exciting to be back in my hometown community and offer some surgeries that haven't been offered in the past." Said Dr. Riley Lamb, a general surgeon at Avera St. Mary's.
Doctors Brandt Becker and Riley Lamb are the newest faces in the hospital's surgery department. Having gone through medical school together they have already established a great working friendship and trust. They also bring more surgical options to patients in Pierre.
"A wide variety of procedures both open procedures and laparoscopic procedures, minimally invasive procedures extending from head and neck through chest cases, abdominal cases, etc." Said Dr. Becker.
"Everything from resecting a portion of the colon, to hernia repair, to regular bowel surgery, to emergent laparoscopic procedures such as appendectomy and gallbladder surgery those types procedures." Said Dr. Lamb.
The renovation of the hospital building itself was just the first step bringing in the new surgeons and specialties is delivering on the promise to improve local patient care.
"More integrated, more streamlined and Avera has made a big commitment to helping us get the resources that we need to better serve our patients in a more timely fashion with less travel time to Sioux Falls, Rapid City or the other areas." Said Dr. Becker.
Being under the Avera umbrella has not only expanded the hospital's coverage area but it also gives doctors and patients access to specialities across the region. But one of the biggest improvements was adding Dr. Christie Brown, the hospital's first anesthesiologist.
"She's offering a wide variety of regional nerve blocks and anesthetic procedures that we just didn't have before which allows us to do more with less invasive procedures." Said Dr. Lamb.
For all three doctors, Avera St. Mary's isn't just a job; it's also home.
"You're not just a patient with a medical record number you are someone that we know we know your family we know your kids and were able to integrate that and be flexible with those needs and really focus on servicing care as opposed to just the numbers." Said Dr. Becker.
