Wolves Win in Final Seconds at Minot State

Jared Jacobson hit Michael Alberts in the back of the end zone off play-action for a one-yard touchdown pass with four seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, and then Jacobson scored on a quarterback keeper for a two-point conversion to give Northern State a dramatic come-from-behind 22-21 victory over Minot State Saturday in Minot, N.D.

The Northern (2-4) drive went 65 yards on 16 plays in 1:47 as the Wolves found themselves trailing 21-13 after Randel Barber scored on a four-yard touchdown plunge with 1:51 to go in the game. The key to the drive, and the game was a fourth-down and 10 conversion when Jacobson hooked-up with Chris Malsam for a 29-yard gain down to the Minot four. Three plays later was the Alberts score.
The Wolves rushed for 174 yards in the game while holding Minot to just 80 yards and 2.4 yards per carry in the victory. Northern passed for 145 yards and accumulated 319 yards of total offense while the Beavers passed for 277 yards and 357 yards of total offense.
The NSU defense was stout all game as the Northern pass rush came alive Saturday as the Wolves recorded a season-high four sacks in the contest. Channing Barber also preserved a 14-13 lead late in the third quarter with an interception in the end zone.
Northern scored first in the game for the fourth time this season on a nine-yard run by Jacobson. The Wolves needed to just cover 34 yards on the drive as Jayson Geditz stuffed a fourth-down and two attempt by the Beavers on Minot's offensive possession before.
After a Brian Gutierrez 28-yard field goal and an eight-yard touchdown reception by the NSIC leader in catches, Wayne Peters, the Wolves trailed 10-7. Gutierrez added a 31-yard field goal to end the first half and NSU went into the locker room trailing 13-7. Northern then retook the lead on a 46-yard touchdown rumble by Cameron Pudwill on 4th-and-2 to give Northern the lead back. For the game, the Wolves were 4-for-7 on 4th-down conversions.
Pudwill was one of three rushers for Northern to record more than 45 yards on the ground in the win. Pudwill led NSU with 51 yards on three carries. Stephen Erlandson had 49 yards on 15 carries while Jacobson rushed 10 times for 48 yards.
Jacobson went 14-for-32 for 145 yards passing with one TD and one interception Saturday. Tanner White led the Wolves receiving core with six grabs for 51 yards. Connor Doherty had 14 yards receiving on three catches. Alberts, Spencer Flakus, Taylor Houchin, John Hughes and Malsam each had one catch apiece in the victory.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Wolves were led by Logan Dosch and Alberts with six tackles each. Barber, Geditz and Ryan Weybrecht each added five stops. Dakota Odermann led the Wolves pass rush with two sacks in the game while Brandon Hoellein and Apollo Ford each had a sack. For the game, Northern recorded eight tackles-for-loss.
Next up will be a return to Swisher Field for the Wolves Oct. 19 as Bemidji State comes to town for a 2:30 p.m. tilt.
