State educators to meet with parents to discuss the 'Common Core' curriculum

Posted: Updated:

Most parents want their kids to do well in school.

And the state wants to roll out a new curriculum which it says will make for better students.
but many parents are not convinced.

The department of education hopes to change their minds.

Many educators are excited about the program which they say stresses results instead of just memorizing and repeating back information.

Educators believe the 'Common Core' will help kids become better students.

The curriculum focuses on teaching students English and math but applying what they learn to real world situations.

South Dakota Education Secretary Dr. Melody Schopp said "my whole purpose tonight is really just to give the information about what the common core standards are, number one. Hopefully dispel any myths or concerns that there might be, that are out there, and really to insure parents that what we are attempting to do is that we're really putting kids on the trajectory towards college."

School Administrators of South Dakota Executive Director Dr. Wade Pogany said "our standards in the past have been at a very basic level of understanding, so these standards take us up to another level of real world application, having students apply the learning in real world settings, and I think that is one of many benefits we'll see with the common core standards."

Some parents fear these new standards will dumb-down their children's education.

If you have questions about the Common Core, the Sioux Falls school district invites you to attend their public forum tonight at 7 p.m.

It's being held at the district's instructional planning center at East 38th Street and South 1st Avenue.
