Attorney General releases new information about Union Co. cold case
Officials released new information today on the Union County cold case that has left investigators stumped for more than four decades.
Back in September, law enforcement officials pulled an old Studebaker out of Brule Creek near Elk Point. The car is believed to be connected to the disappearance of Cheryl Miller and Pamela Jackson, who were last seen May 29, 1971 -- when they were both 17.
This afternoon, Attorney General Marty Jackley said the car is believed to have been in third gear when it crashed into the creek where a fisherman found it earlier this year. Jackley said this is inconsistent with foul play.
"We believe we have the remains of two individuals," Jackley said. "We have sent those remains to the University of Northern Texas to do some special DNA testing because we believe the skeletal remains were underwater for more than 42 years. [The testing] will make sure we have a positive identification and that we can give proper respect and burials to the two individuals."
Jackley expects to have more information on the case in the next 30 to 90 days.
