SIOUX FALLS  – The number of fans that came to the Birdcage in 2013 not only set a franchise record for the Sioux Falls Canaries, it also stands out amongst all of independent baseball.

The Canaries saw an overall increase of 30,590 fans, the second highest total for an independent team in the U.S. or Canada. Only the Fort Worth Cats of the United League had a higher jump (32,462).

"We're very grateful for the community's response this year, because we work hard to provide the area with an affordable, family-friendly entertainment option during the summer," Canaries CEO / President Tom Garrity said on Tuesday. "We also appreciate our corporate partners, who were a big factor in this season's success."

The last two seasons have been marked by significant attendance growth. 2012 saw a 72 percent increase, and 2013 had a 26 percent boost. Overall, the Birds are up 115 percent in average attendance since 2011. The Birds' new attendance record of 161,131 established this year surpassed the 150,837 mark set in 2008.

The Canaries finished 13th in average attendance out of 48 independent teams in the U.S. and Canada, according to figures compiled by Ballpark Digest.

The 2014 campaign will be the Canaries' 22nd season and ninth as members of the independent American Association. For more information about business partnerships or season tickets in 2014, call the Canaries at (605) 336-6060.
