Preparing for out-of-town pheasant hunters

Posted: Updated:

Saturday is the first day of the pheasant season for out-of-town hunters and it takes a lot of preparation to get ready for all of them.

At the Rooster River Hunting Lodge in Flandreau, Friday night was the calm before the storm.

The dogs are ready go and the hunters are too. Behind the scenes out at the lodge, six months of preparation has gone into making this first weekend of pheasant hunting a hit.

"The big thing for us is getting the land ready, getting land prepped, making sure we have everything in order as far as supplies based on the amount of hunters that we have booked for the season," Matt Kitto, Operations Manager.

With the pheasant numbers expected to be down in South Dakota this year, many thought the number of out-of-town hunters would decrease as well. However, that's not the case out in Flandreau.

"What it boils down to is these guys are here to do what they love to do and if they shoot one bird or see a bird, they're happy. They're doing something they love that's been handed down to them for generations," said Kitto.

KItto said he thinks the bigger crop of hunters has to do with the state's marketing, creating a following that spans the country.

"Everyone wants to come to South Dakota to shoot birds so we're thankful for that," said Kitto.
