Suspect accused of killing Sioux Falls toddler faces life in prison
The Sioux Falls man accused of killing his girlfriend's toddler was indicted by a Lincoln County Grand Jury Friday.
Joseph R. Patterson was charged with Second Degree Murder and alternative counts of First Degree Manslaughter, Aggravated Battery of an Infant and Abuse or Cruelty to a Minor.
Patterson is currently held on charges related to the assault of Tyrese Robert Ruffin, the 2-year-old son of Patterson's girlfriend. Ruffin's biological father is Minnesota Viking Adrian Peterson.
Ruffin died as a result of his injuries.
Sioux Falls Police say they responded with EMS to a call for a medical emergency Oct. 9 at an apartment in the 6200 block of South Connie Avenue. When they arrived, they found Ruffin, who was not breathing and rushed him to an area hospital.
While at the hospital and during treatment, police learned the child had injuries that were consistent with abuse. Ruffin died from his injuries Oct. 11.
Second Degree Murder is a Class 'B' felony that carries a mandatory life sentence. First Degree Manslaughter is a Class 'C' felony that carries up to a life sentence.
