Memorial service scheduled for boy killed in alleged assault
Family and friends will gather this week to remember a two-year-old Sioux Falls boy killed in an alleged assault.
Sioux Falls Police say they responded with EMS to a call for a medical emergency Oct. 9 at an apartment in the 6200 block of South Connie Avenue. When they arrived, they found Ruffin, who was not breathing and rushed him to an area hospital.
While at the hospital and during treatment, police learned the child had injuries that were consistent with abuse. Ruffin died from his injuries Oct. 11.
The Sioux Falls man accused of killing Ruffin was indicted by a Lincoln County Grand Jury Friday. Joseph R. Patterson was charged with Second Degree Murder and alternative counts of First Degree Manslaughter, Aggravated Battery of an Infant and Abuse or Cruelty to a Minor. Patterson is currently held on charges related to the assault of Ruffin, the 2-year-old son of Patterson's girlfriend.
Ruffin's biological father is Minnesota Viking Adrian Peterson.
According to an obituary, Ty was born in Minneapolis, MN, on August 22, 2011.
A gathering of fellowship for friends and acquaintances will be held Tuesday, October 22.
