Halloween is next week and nothing says Spooktacular like candy. But, it's easy to get carried away and find yourself in a candy coma. Here's a look at some of the best and worst candies, thanks to some help from mensfitness.com.
Dum Dums vs Candy Corn
Dum Dums are the better option. They're just 26 calories a lollipop. They're also portion controlled and take longer to eat. A handful of candy corn is about 140 calories and let's be honest no one can eat just one handful of candy corn.
Candy Bar Minis vs Reese's Peanut Butter Pumpkins
The minis are a better choice when you're trying to control your portion size. Three of them are approximately 24 calories. The Reese's pumpkins pack a whopping 180 calories. They also have as much saturated fat as a fast food hamburger.
Smarties Candies vs Taffy
Smarties are actually the "smart" choice. While they are full of sugar, there are 20 per roll, which stretches your calories out across lots of eating. And since you have to unroll them one-by-one, they're not exactly a "binge eating" candy.
While taffy isn't high in calories or fat, your dentist hates this stuff. Taffy tends to stick in the crevices in your teeth, and that tends to lead to cavities.
Dark Chocolate vs Mounds
This last one, may be deceiving. While dark chocolate has a lot of health benefits, Mounds includes coconut which can be good for you as well.
The best one for you is the dark chocolate. There are 42 calories per square and dark chocolate has been shown to be good for the heart. It's also high in flavonoids.
And while Mounds has plenty of coconut, there are more than three grams of saturated fat per serving.
