Roommate disagreement ends in arson charges

Posted: Updated:

A roommate disagreement turned violent when one of the men involved attempted to set the residence on fire, Sioux Falls police said.

Sioux Falls Police and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to the 3200 block of N. Cliff Ave. around noon Thursday for what was initially reported as a structure fire on the scanner.

When officers arrived, they didn't find a fire, but instead three roommates arguing about money and duties around the house. During the fight, David Whitten, 38, went into the bathroom, stuffed clothing into a vent and attempted to start a fire, Capt. Greg VandeKamp said.

The two other roommates discovered Whitten in the act, and one hit him over the head with a frying pan.

SFFR crews determined the fire wasn't an accident, and David Whitten was charged with first degree arson.

Whitten received medical attention for his head injuries.
