No. 22 St. Cloud State forced six Northern State turnovers and returned two for scores as the Wolves football team fell Saturday afternoon 64-7 in St. Cloud, Minn. NSU drops to 3-5 overall on the season and has lost two games to ranked opponents in 2013.
NSIC Preseason North Offensive Player of the Year Phillip Klaphake went 22-for-30 for 295 yards passing and five touchdowns in the game. While the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, defensive back Jack Moro led the Huskies with seven tackles and had two interceptions, including one he returned 72 yards for a touchdown.
Wolves quarterback Jared Jacobson passed for 103 yards and hit Cam Pudwill for a two-yard score for NSU's lone score of the contest. Wil Carlson led the Wolves with two catches for 28 yards. Taylor Houchin, John Hughes and Chris Malsam each had two catches in the loss for Northern.
Sean Schweichler led Northern with 64 yards rushing on 18 carries. Jacobson had 45 yards on the ground, while Terrelle Walker had 26 yards on six carries.
Defensively, the Wolves were led by Devin Olson who had five total tackles, including a sack and two tackles-for-loss. Jayson Geditz and Zach Neer each had five tackles as well. Jalon Bibbs also recorded a sack in the loss. Channing Barber had three stops and an interception for the Wolves' lone takeaway.
SCSU scored on five of its first six drives of the game and also blocked a Northern punt in the first quarter, forcing a safety and took a 43-0 lead into halftime.
Northern will return home to Swisher Field next weekend for a 1 p.m. game with U-Mary.
