Cuts to a federal food assistance program are coming this Friday.
The drop in benefits could cause more people to seek out help locally.
With these cuts, they're concerned about the long term affects on families already struggling to make ends meet.
And while many people give generously throughout the holidays to help those in need, the battle to end hunger in our state is year-round.
The Sioux Falls Food Pantry is about to get very busy.
Feeding South Dakota Operations Director Chad Olson said "November and December are probably the busiest months for us, but more in terms of donations, than in terms of need. But we anticipate that these cuts to the program are going to affect people over the holidays."
And with cuts to the federal food assistance program SNAP coming on November 1st, these donations could become more valuable even after the holidays are over.
"We try to get that out to people during the holidays to give because a lot of it will supplement other times of the year. The middle of summer people just don't think about it," Olson said.
SNAP food benefits will drop about $36 for a family of four.
"Normally, if you were to cut your food budget by just a few dollars, it wouldn't affect you but when you're barely making it, that's a significant impact on your food budget," Olson said.
But it could also impact Feeding South Dakota.
"When we look to the future, and know that cuts are coming the only thing we don't know is how large those cuts are going to be, but as cuts come through, how do we get more food, to those people in need, not only in Sioux Falls but throughout the state of South Dakota," Olson said.
And donations are always welcome.
"We can't do it alone. That's really where, if individuals wanted to do a food drive, if individuals wanted to give a monetary donation, that will go a long way to help us try to end hunger in South Dakota," Olson said.
One out of every eight people in South Dakota is at risk of going hungry.
So a reduction in SNAP benefits could become a struggle for those needing help to put food on the table.
