TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona shot 51 percent from the field to hand Augustana an 84-52 exhibition loss in front of 13,340 fans at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. on Monday night.
Augustana was led by Daniel Jansen, who finished with 18 points on 7 of 16 shooting. Yuriy Malashenko added 14 points for the Vikings, hitting 4 of 6 shots from 3-point range. Malashenko also led Augustana on the glass with a game-high eight rebounds. Casey Schilling also hit double-digits for the Vikings, finishing with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Augustana and Arizona tied on the boards with 39 rebounds each. The Vikings dominated the offensive glass, grabbing 15 offensive rebounds.
The Wildcats finished the game shooting 76 percent from the free throw line, hitting 19 of 25 shots from the stripe. Augustana was just 7 of 15 (47 percent) from the free throw line and 30 percent (19 of 63) from the field in the game.
Arizona had five players in double-figures, led by Brandon Ashley and Gabe York who each had 14. TJ McConnell added 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting, while dishing out eight assists. Kaleb Tarczewski added 12 points and led the Wildcats with seven rebounds.
Augustana started out strong as it opened up an early 7-2 lead as Jansen scored seven straight points for the Vikings. Jansen wasted no time going after 7-footer Tarcewski for an early bucket and foul before hitting another basket and a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the game, at 13-12, when McConnell stripped Jamall Taylor and went the distance for a bucket. Arizona then went on a 14-0 run over the next 4:50 to take a 22-12 lead with 10:52 to play in the first half.
Arizona extended its run to 20-4 over just under nine minutes to take a 28-16 lead with 7:12 to play in the first half.
The Vikings stayed with the Wildcats over the last five minutes of the first half and went into the locker room trailing Arizona 46-32.
Arizona shot 55 percent (16 of 29) from the field in the first half, including 38 percent (5 of 13) from the free throw line. The Vikings shot 38 percent (13 of 34) in the half while hitting 4 of 15 (29 percent) from 3-point range.
Augustana shot 29 percent from the free throw line in the half hitting 2 of 7 from the stripe. Augustana out-rebounded Arizona 20-18 in the half, grabbing 12 defensive rebounds. The Vikings grabbed eight offensive boards, to just two for Arizona.
The Vikings came out fast to start the second half, going on a 6-1 run over the first minute and made it an 11-point game, at 49-38, on a 3-pointer by Malashenko.
The Wildcats roared right back, going on an 8-3 run, to push its lead to 18 at 59-41 with 13:01 remaining in the game. Over the next six minutes, Arizona extended its lead to 75-44 before Jansen grabbed another offensive rebound for the Vikings and got the put-back, foul and the free throw to make it a 75-47 game.
Arizona was on cruise control from there and went on out-score the Vikings 38-20 in the second half.
Augustana continues exhibition play this week, hosting St. Olaf College this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Elmen Center. The Vikings will then travel to Ames, Iowa to take on Iowa State University at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3.
