Joseph Patterson's family posts bond; alleged killer released from jail

Posted: Updated:

The man who allegedly killed a Sioux Falls toddler was released from the Minnehaha County Jail this morning, the jail confirmed.

At 11:15 a.m. Joseph Patterson posted bond.

According to Lincoln County State's Attorney Tom Wollman, Patterson's family posted his $750,000 cash bond. There are no stipulations on his bond to remain in Lincoln or Minnehaha counties, Wollman said.

Patterson's bond was lowered yesterday at a court hearing where he pleaded not guilty.

He is charged with Second Degree Murder and alternative counts of First Degree Manslaughter, Aggravated Battery of an Infant and Abuse or Cruelty to a Minor for the Oct. 11 death of 2-year-old Tyrese Robert Ruffin.

Although a judge raised Patterson's bond when he was charged with the murder last week, the defense argued successfully Monday for his bond to be lowered, despite Wollman's argument that Patterson is a threat to the community and a flight risk.

Tim Rensch, Patterson's defense attorney, said his client has family ties to the area and is in the middle of a construction project.

A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for January 13, 2014.
