Board on geographic names approves new name for Moody County creek

The South Dakota Board on Geographic Names hasunanimously approved a name change recommended by Flandreau Santee Sioux TribalElders for a creek in Moody County. 

The board is recommending that Squaw Creek in Moody Countybe renamed to Isanti Creek. Isanti is the Dakota word for Santee.The creek, near Trent,is where tribal members camped and lived, and was originally named for anAmerican Indian woman who drowned in the creek.

The board is providing the public with an opportunity toexpress any concerns or opposition to the recommended name change. Writtencomments should be submitted no later than Dec. 1, 2013.
