PIERRE -- More than two dozen people have applied to be the next fire chief in South Dakota's capital city. Pierre City Administrator Leon Schochenmaier tells KCCR radio that there has been interest in the job from people around the country, and the quality of applicants is high. The job becomes vacant Friday when current chief Bill Alexander retires after eight years. Schochenmaier says a committee is determining which of the applicants will be interviewed. Officials hope to hire someone next month.
