Sioux Falls, SD, October 31, 2013 -- Ice Sports Association (ISA) today broke ground on the SCHEELS IcePlex, a year-round, three-sheet indoor community ice facility being constructed at the Sanford Sports Complex, north of the Pentagon.
"This is not the beginning of indoor ice in Sioux Falls," said Joe Zueger, Founder and Co-Organizer of the ISA, "it's just the start of a new chapter. The founding fathers of indoor ice sacrificed so much when they raised private funds to build the Minnehaha Ice and Recreation Center over 30 years ago, and today we pay tribute to them. This is our opportunity to pay it forward by building an efficient, modern-day facility that will serve our community for decades to come."
The $8-8.5 million dollar facility will include three NHL regulation-sized sheets of ice, lockers and dressing rooms, off-ice training facilities, a reception/lobby area with warm viewing to the rinks, bleacher seating, concessions, restrooms, office spaces, a community room and paved parking.
Fundraising for the facility began in 2011. Since then, more than $6.5 million has been raised for the project. Of that amount, more than $3.5 million was raised from private sources, $1.5 million from the Chamber Community Appeals campaign, and $1.5 million from the City of Sioux Falls. The land is provided by Sanford Health.
"We are overwhelmed and inspired by the generosity of the nearly 400 donors to this project," said Sue Salter, Executive Director of the ISA. "It is rare to find a community facility financed to such a large degree by private donations. The multi-faceted support from individuals, user group families, the business community and the City of Sioux Falls is making this long overdue project a reality for our community at last."
The SCHEELS IcePlex will serve the public with open recreational skating opportunities, and will be home to both the Sioux Falls Youth Hockey Association and the Sioux Falls Figure Skating Club. In addition, the facility will serve adult hockey leagues and new recreational ice programs such as broomball leagues and curling. Games, multi-team tournaments, competitions and skills development camps will all be hosted at the facility.
Construction will begin immediately on the SCHEELS IcePlex, with a completion date of September, 2014. Fundraising continues as the ISA works to secure an additional $1 million in equity. A combination of private donations, naming rights to rinks, grants and gifts from foundations will round out the fundraising efforts.
