Police officer struck by bullet in Pierre standoff

Pierre police say one officer was shot by a man during a standoff that ended early Friday morning.

Jason Todd Garreau, 27, of Eagle Butte, was arrested early Friday morning, after a standoff with police at a mobile home. Police say in the process of attempting to arrest Garreau, the suspect barricaded himself in the residence.  During the course of the standoff the suspect fired several shots at law enforcement, one which struck an officer. The officer did not receive life-threatening injuries.

Garreau was wanted as part of an ongoing federal investigation into a fatal shooting this week near Fort Thompson. He's being held in the Hughes County Jail on a federal detainer and further charges are pending.  A joint investigation involving federal and state authorities is ongoing. 

The following agencies were involved in the apprehension: Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshall Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Pierre Police Department, and Hughes County Sheriff's Office.

The Oahe Chapter of the American Red Cross offered shelter to 30 people who were evacuated from their homes during the standoff.  They were allowed to return to their homes about 2:00 Friday morning.
