SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Former Augustana men's basketball standout and all-time leading scorer, Cameron McCaffrey has signed a professional contract and will play for Nuova Alius Pallacanestro located in San Severo, Italy.
McCaffrey, a native of Portland, Ore., is the 20th player in Augustana men's basketball history to sign a professional contract and the first to do so for a team in Italy.
"I am excited about the opportunity to play the game that I love at the professional level," McCaffrey said. "I am grateful for the opportunity and hope that this is just the beginning of a long and successful career. I want to thank Augustana and the coaching staff for four great years and for developing me into a more complete person both athletically and academically."
McCaffrey will be the first American to play for Nuova Alius Pallacanestro, a team which won a league championship last season.
McCaffrey capped off a stellar collegiate career in 2012-13 by leading the Vikings with 21.3 points and 4.8 assists per game. He also led the team in field goals made (213), field goals attempted (456), 3-point field goals made (43), 3-point field goals attempted (152), free throws made (179), steals (30), and minutes played (34.5/game).
He led the Vikings in scoring in 28 of 31 games last season and scored 20 or more points in a game 18 times, including 30, 36 and his career-high of 40 points. McCaffrey earned three All-America honors last season and was named to the All-NSIC First Team in two out of four seasons.'
Augustana head coach Tom Billeter and his staff are proud of McCaffrey's accomplishment. McCaffrey was a three-time Academic All-NSIC honoree and earned CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Teams honors last season. He scored 1,964 career points to become Augustana's all-time leading scorer and ranks fourth all-time in points per game (16.8), fifth in field goals made (644), first in field goals attempted (1,429), second in 3-point field goals (201) and 3-point field goals attempted (538) and third in free throws made (475).
Augustana men's basketball opens the regular season this weekend at the Sanford Pentagon Basketball Showcase in Sioux Falls. The Vikings will take on Missouri Western at 6 p.m. on Saturday and Central Missouri at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Augustana College is located in Sioux Falls, S.D. and is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
